Garden Buddy

Garden Buddy by Island Apps

Available on iPhone, iPod Touch, & iPad

The snow has melted, the trees are budding and that means time to start to tackling all those landscaping projects you’ve been putting off. If you’re like me you don’t mind getting your hands dirty but figuring out how many bags of soil is needed for my raised garden beds or how many rolls of sod it will take to cover the backyard is a pain. Now there really is an app for that…the Garden Buddy promises to help people with “common garden math” and even includes a vegetable gardening guide.

This app will help you figure out everything from how much soil/mulch is required to cover an area, how many fish can fit in your pond to how many plants are needed to fill your garden (I especially like this more buying too many flowers at the garden center). It even has planting information for a variety of vegetables. Finally, it can help locate local sources for home and gardening supplies and even provide driving directions. This app is available in both imperial (North American) and metric (International) versions.

I think this app has a lot of good points. First, it really does make “garden math” easy. Just pop in the measurements and it does all the hard work. The variety of calculations it can handle is also quite nice. The ability to locate local supplies is particularly handy. This feature requires that the location service is on, you have internet access (wifi or data plan) and GPS (alternatively you can manually enter in your location). Unfortunately, I had some issues with this section of the app. As I was using an iPod touch, I had to enter my location in manually. Neither version appeared to let me enter “Canada” after my postal code, nor did it accept several abbreviations of the it either. However, both versions allowed me to manually enter in several other locations (eg. America or European depending on the version) but would crash when I would try to tap on a result. This is unlikely to be an issue for iPhone users since the phone has a built-in GPS and the app should be able to find their location automatically.

Overall, this app is great for people who want an easy way to solve garden math problems on the go.
