Rolling Star Free

Rolling Star Free (free) by zgame

Available on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad

I’m gonna start off by saying that Rolling Star Free would be getting 4 stars if the developer could make up their mind about the “free” revenue model… sell upgrades, sell levels, or run ads? Unfortunately zgame is doing all three of those things which kind of ruins what is otherwise a pretty decent puzzle game (the video below doesn’t show the ads). Developers certainly have the right to make a buck when they give away their work for “free”, but this kind of overkill is really a turnoff.

So anyway… Rolling Star Free! You tilt your device to roll a Boy star through obstacle courses with the ultimate goal of hooking up with Girl star. Succeed and you move on to the next level; fail and the poor Girl star bursts into tears.

The creativity of the obstacle courses in Rolling Star isn’t earth shattering, but it’s pretty good… there are fireballs that fly around, cloud platforms that move, and bouncy platforms that bounce, to name a few. In each level your Boy star has the opportunity to catch other stars on the way to getting the Girl, and figuring out how to capture all the stars can be pretty tough which is where this game gets its replay value.

If you buy stars (read: credits) from the in-game store you can get powerups that will help you, but when I tried the Frost powerup (immunity to fireballs) it lasted for one level and then, win or lose, it was gone. Lame! Maybe this is just me being cheap, but I would think that springing for an upgrade would at least last long enough for me to clear the level.

Overall the graphics and gameplay in Rolling Star Free are pretty good, but playing through 36 puzzles (18 stages x 2 levels) was easily done in one sitting. The remaining 36 puzzles are locked and have to be bought which, again, is laaaaaaame.

If you download this game, expect the ride to be mildly entertaining but very short unless you want to commit some of your gaming budget to it.

Fun Yes
Sound & Graphics Good
Controls Easy, just tilt
Replay Value Blah, unless you buy the extra levels
Overall A good game ruined by too many attempts at getting paid
